Empowering women to take action against energy poverty in the Mediterranean

The main contribution of IREC to empower energy poverty affected people is to develop a fast method to do energy audits through smart meter readings and participate to monitor the thermal comfort of several households to provide useful tools to analyze and easily explain the energy bill.

The reason behind the project is that, in Mediterranean countries, the coastal areas are facing several specific challenges when it comes to energy poverty, mainly connected with thermal comfort of dwellings. Buildings are scarcely isolated, often there are no heating systems in buildings, those are highly inefficient or unused to save consumption and the cooling component is more important than in other areas, calling for a diversity of energy services beyond heating. Women and women-led households are disproportionately affected by energy poverty, while women’s agency is highlighted in acting against energy poverty.

EmpowerMED contributes to the energy poverty abatement through implementing a set of practical energy efficiency, RES measures and policy recommendations with the focus set on gender issues.

The project will run from 1 September 2019 – 31 August 2023. It is financed with slightly less than 2 million EUR from H2020 budget line. It covers 7 countries with 9 partner organizations.  EmpowerMED – 847052 H2020 program. For more information, please visit the EmpowerMED H2020 project.
